A dirty and stained A4 sheet of paper, printed with purple images and text in a monospaced font. A logo including a sun, with an ocean wave cresting inside it, in a shape vaguely reminiscent of a tongue ringed by sharp teeth. A large headline reading Last Resort News Report with the tagline Where Else Would You Want To Go? and the date May 20th, with the year obscured by a smudge of ash.
Body text, headline in all caps: Type Troubles
Just a quick note that we’ve had some technical difficulties involving the old typewriter and the dining hall stairs, and had to shift to our back-up, which fortunately remains in one piece! Hopefully the new version isn’t too different!
Headline in all caps: Celebration Success
Our harvest celebration last weekend went off without a hitch! More or less! The usual delights such as the Singing Singhs’ wonderful music and a wonderful spread of the autumn’s bounty from the kitchens were just the start. Rachel and Robbie broke out a new cider press they’ve been working on for the last month and treated us to mugs of fresh, hot cider, mulled with horopito and a little honey. Alice, Rangi and Nyala treated us to a delightful repertoire of old folk songs, practised while scouting on the road, accompanied by Rangi’s guitar – look out, Sangita and Keerath, you might have some competition! Just as important, the whole event was problem free, and everyone woke up in the morning without bruises or hang-overs! There was a small incursion of slotters from the beach – they may have learned that music means less guards – but our volunteers on the walls dealt
with them easily, with our new cross-bows mounted on the watch towers!
New column, headline in all caps: Weather Woes
The long, gentle autumn has finally given way to winter’s bite, and with it the rainy days that keep us all inside. Traditionally, this is when we find all the new leaks in our roofs and gutters. If you find such a problem, get in touch with Robbie at the workshop – he’s focusing his efforts on knocking together buckets and tubs, both to deal with these leaks and to fill the various needs of our community, and he’ll happily lend you one and make note of the leak for repairs when possible.
Headline in all caps: Fireside Fancies
Alice and Rangi, along with their new comrade Nyala, are going to be building on their performance at the harvest celebration to start their fireside singalongs again! All last winter, these cosy little gatherings kept us warm inside and out, and we expect this year to be even better!
Jon and his team in the kitchens are getting in on the action, too. They’ve been gathering grass seed all summer, and have ground it into a dry powder called “flour”. This was once a staple food, but we’ve been unable to get our hands on the proper seeds. Jon’s going to be experimenting with some new baking techniques, so come to the community fire to try some tasty new treats!
