A dirty and stained A4 sheet of paper, printed with purple images and text in a monospaced font. A logo including a sun, with an ocean wave cresting inside it, in a shape vaguely reminiscent of a tongue ringed by sharp teeth. A large headline reading Last Resort News Report with the tagline Where Else Would You Want To Go? and the date April 8th, with the year obscured by smeared brown dirt.
Body text, headline in all caps: Healthcare Helpers
Recent events here and in the Duchy have made it clear that, with our growing community, we need trained and dedicated healthcare workers. Whether it’s setting a bone, delivering a breech baby, or stopping an epidemic from spreading, we need people who know what they’re doing and are ready to spring into action at any time. After all, we’re not the small huddle of wary wanderers who first found this place three decades ago!
To fill this need, Caleb McCrae, the community scholar, has agreed to a series of work assignments intended to broaden his practical skills in ways that will help him fill the role of community doctor. Yes, you can finally be correct when you call him “doc”!
Dhaya Singh, apprentice tailor and contralto, will be undertaking a similar course of work training to become a dedicated nurse, where we hope she’ll need more skills than just strong needlework! Between the two of them, Caleb and Dhaya should be able to provide any kind of care our community needs for some time! If you see them out and about doing different work than their usual assignments, I’m sure a few words of encouragement would be welcome!
Headline in all caps: Tater Time
The current task in the field is to harvest our first crop of potatoes! A turn digging will always be appreciated, but the majority of labour needed is carrying them to the wash station, and from the wash (new column) station to the root cellar. A full root cellar now means full bellies through to spring, so get to it!
Headline in all caps: Waiheke Worries
We know many of you are worried for trading partners on the islands, and we’ve received a lot of queries about what we’re doing to help. We have a few efforts going which will culminate soon in a mercy mission southwards, so to set your minds at ease, here they are!
Gemma has been working hard to make half a dozen water distillers just like the ones we use, with notes on how to make more, since Caleb says dirty water is a common source of gut troubles like they’re dealing with. We’ll trade them for sheet metals, hopefully copper to replace the materials used in production!
Eli has been working hard with the last of last year’s potatoes, now that new potatoes are coming in. He got a work crew to help empty the cellar and has been making high strength potato vodka to help keep things sterile ever since! He’s also working on replenishing our supply of antibiotics, since we provided everything we had to the Duchy two weeks ago.
Headline in all caps: Call For Chemists
On that note, Eli’s current state of overwork has finally convinced him to take an apprentice! If you’d like to learn about chemistry and take on an important role in the community with no heavy lifting, apply to Rachel! She’ll pass suitable applicants on to her father!
